TURF LOCKS HOTEL

The Turf Locks, Exeter Photograph by Sean Creech (c) 2001 The Turf Locks is a very pleasant public house and hotel situated alongside Exeter Canal, running parellel to the River Exe. The building was built by James Green in the 1820's, he also built the nearby Double Locks. There were stables at the Locks, which probably housed the horses used to pull barges along the 5 mile length of canal.

It can be reached on foot, if you are up to a 5 mile walk from Exeter Quayside, by using either bank. It is also a popular cycle route. The most pleasurable way to reach the Turf Locks Hotel is by boat. You could hire your own canoe from the Quayside, of The Turf Locks, Exeter Photograph by Sean Creech (c) 2001take an even more relaxed cruise on the White Heather, which operates in the high season from the Double Locks, the route passing under the Countess wear swingbridge. A ferry is also available from picturesque Topsham. It cannot be reached by motor vehicle. The grounds are spacious enough for the whole family to roam freely (although bear in mind there is a lot of water around). The views around the Exe Estuary are superb, and this is just the ideal place to relax on a summers day!

Walk a little further along the Exe estuary, you can get to Powderham, or cross over the water to Topsham.
